EURAC’S involvement in the EU funded projects – SEETAC, TRANSITECTS, iMONITRAF!

Within the SEETAC project the European Academy of Bolzano - Institute for Regional Development and Location Management is primarily in charge of the work package 4 (WP4). Its main task is the definition of multi-modal traffic scenarios, common mobility standards and environmental guidelines. Several technical meetings took place in Rome, Bucharest and Trieste to carry out the elaboration of a sustainable traffic model and transport scenarios for the road-, rail- and waterway-network. These gatherings aimed the definition of the SEETAC network and, consequently, data requirements. During these meetings, the network design, analysis and the data selection, necessary to run the model were thoroughly discussed. At the last project meeting, SEETAC partners also talked about the model methodology, modeling functions, the graph elaboration and multimodal traffic scenarios. The discussion among participants showed that participants had different perspectives on data to be collected for the model. All participants gave their inputs and a harmonized and coherent view was achieved  through accurate and comprehensive discussions and consultations

EURAC and its external expert Mr. Massimo Santori (CSST, Fiat Group) will technically implement the traffic model in  close collaboration with the project partner of WP3 (CEI's external expert Sistemi Operativi) who is in charge of the database. The traffic model and data collection require a concrete geographic reference and a clear definition of traffic infrastructures that should be considered. Hence, different traffic graphs, reflecting the relevant connections and nodes, have been drawn to define a network which all Project partners could agree upon. From the discussions different priorities emerged as well as relevance of road-, rail- and waterway routes and corridors, which the  SEETAC country representatives suggested to integrate in the network. For this reason, an  intensive exchange of information took place among experts and partner countries  to set up a common network to start the data selection. The now quite complex and challenging network sets the framework for the next demanding step, i.e. data collection. At the last technical meeting in Trieste it was agreed that the data for the traffic models must be collected by September 2010. Some of the most relevant parameters to be provided are, for example, the estimation of origin and destination, a large scale of parameters that show the traffic direction, as well as capacity parameters, like number of lanes and the validation of centroids and nodes.

Besides SEETAC, EURAC's Institute for Regional Development and Location Management plays a similar role in two other EU funded projects. Namely it is partner in two traffic related projects Transitects - Transalpine Transport Architects (ETC "Alpine Space Programme"¸ www.transitects.org) and iMonitraf! - Implementation of Monitoring of road traffic related effects in the Alpine Space and common measures (ETC "Alpine Space Programme"; www.imonitraf.eu). In May two important meetings took place in Prien, Germany (Transitects) and in Innsbruck, Austria (iMonitraf!). At the successful political Kick-off meeting of the project Transitects a platform for discussion and information exchange was presented, which brought together politicians and stakeholders from the transport sector. The main goal of TRANSITECTS is to develop and implement attractive transport and logistic rail products and systems to disburden traffic bottlenecks in the Alps and to mitigate related negative effects of traffic.

The iMonitraf! Transport Forum provided information about best practices for sustainable transport solutions in different Alpine regions and offered the possibility to share views and experiences with politicians, stakeholders and the public. This meeting also served as an important platform to strengthen the common voice of the Alpine regions and to discuss common strategies and measures for achieving sustainable transalpine traffic.
