8th Danube River Technical Meeting of the Partnership for Improvement of Danube Infrastructure and Navigation (PIDIN)
The 8th Danube River Technical Meeting of the
Partnership for Improvement of Danube Infrastructure and Navigation
(PIDIN) took place on 14th December 2009 in
Vienna. It was organised by the Southeast European Cooperation
Initiative (SECI), which invited Mr. Carlo Fortuna, SEETAC Content
manager to present the SEETAC project during the meeting, pointing
out the necessity of improving accessibility, reinforcing east west
corridors through innovative transport chains between the basins of
the Adriatic and the Black sea, and their economic hinterlands,
involving the Danube as a potential continental backbone between
the two basins.
On that occasion Mr. Fortuna explained that when looking at the
SEE macro region as a problematic area in the EU integration
perspective, we must have a pragmatic approach considering the long
term strategic evolution. Moreover, he added that full integration
and the short term effectiveness of existing and available
resources, both from the public and private is required. The focus
of the SEETAC project will mainly be placed on freight mobility and
logistics' chains serving the market trend evolution and the local
infrastructure and economy deployment potentials.
The SEE integrated accessibility development must include both
the transits through the inner European national borders and the
outer continental borders as crucial areas for improving
accessibility on the EU territory. Accessibility cannot be seen
only through the center-periphery irradiation pattern, but also as
a more balanced network, like a grid, connecting peripheries and
border regions among them, that enable investments in those
territories where the location factors are favorable for labor
costs and supply, lower densities and less congested areas.
To improving and implement a continental infrastructure network
means to consider the role that the main cities, ports, inter-modal
centers and national borders may play as crucial areas for
enhancing the SEE macro region performance. For this reason, SEETAC
received a strong support from SECI.
Among other issues, the meeting tackled Danube Region EU
Strategy, connections between transport and energy infrastructure,
Infrastructure improvement and obstacles removal, regional
opportunities and perspectives.
